The white color is due to the enormous terrazzo concrete components – a nod to other white icons, such as the Flemish Opera, the Cathedral of Our Lady, and the Boerentoren. This concrete is combined with anodized aluminum exterior joinery in the warm bronze color C31. The anodization not only emphasizes the aluminum structure but increases the corrosion resistance - which keeps the material beautiful for longer.
What was once voted the ugliest building in Antwerp has been renovated to be the most beautiful. Wiel Arets Architects, in collaboration with ELD Architects and Matexi, transformed the outdated office building into a stylish residential tower with 240 luxury new-build apartments and penthouses. A white pearl in the middle of the city.
For the windows, Wiel Arets was inspired by the frame of a painting. The window frames form a frame for one of the building's greatest assets: the view. Each room is 'a room with a view'. One that is constantly changing.
Why did they choose aluminum? Durability. Aluminum does not age. It looks elegant and offers a lot of creative freedom. Moreover, this material is 100% recyclable, which fits perfectly in a rebuilding project such as the Antwerp Tower. Another advantage of aluminum is its strength. After all, sturdy profiles were needed to support the large glass sections. Take the penthouse windows for example. They measure no less than 14.7 by 10.5 feet and weigh more than 2,200 lbs. Fortunately, aluminum meets all technical requirements to absorb this weight without sacrificing the slimness of the profiles.
Two of Reynaers window systems were used: MasterLine 8 HI and ConceptPatio 155 LS (Lift and Slide). Together with the engineers of Reynaers Aluminium, these were thoroughly adapted into project-specific profiles to meet the wishes of the client. For example, the window frames received an extruded tube and the sliding windows an extra chamber as a water buffer. The ConceptWall glass facade was also customized. A post depth of 11 in. was required to achieve the necessary Ix values.
Everything was visualized in Avalon, Reynaers Aluminium's 3D virtual reality space. It offers architects and contractors the opportunity to evaluate window systems in detail and choose the most suitable solution – even if the building is still in the design phase.
