An interview with O'People

Reynaers contribution to the apartments O'living

Interview originally published in the first issue of O'People magazine.

The choice of windows/frames at O'LIVING ended up focusing on a common partner of the group, REYNAERS ALUMINUM. Of unquestionable quality and functionality, O'PEOPLE wanted to know a little more than this Belgian brand that has been with us for more than 50 years and with sales in more than 70 countries worldwide.

O'PEOPLE: Silence is gold. This is one of the phrases with which they illustrate the concept of acoustic attenuation that they have been defending so much. What exactly are they looking for?

The United Nations estimates that by 2050, 68% of the world's population will live in urban areas, that is, exposed to sources of intense noise. When 55 dB is the maximum ideal value for exposure to noise on a regular basis, it is thought that people are exposed to a higher value, even at night. This directly impacts everyone's sleep, productivity, health, and quality of life.

What we are looking for is to raise awareness in the community in general that windows, doors, and facades have a direct impact on this issue and to combat any misinformation. A good window makes all the difference!

O'PEOPLE: But your products offer much more than just acoustic solutions. To what extent are they a solution for those looking to live on a greener planet?

At Reynaers Aluminum, product research and development aim to add differentiating solutions on the market under 4 strategic axes - sustainability, comfort, safety, and design - and to contribute to people's quality of life, now and in the future.

Aluminum is the most sustainable raw material for window frames. It is fully recyclable without loss of value, that is, at the end of its useful life, it can be recycled for the same purpose. Electricity is indeed needed to produce it, but we can choose the source of energy used and that is precisely what we do when looking for suppliers that use durable and sustainable sources of electricity. Currently, the aluminum used in Europe has an average of 8.6 kg of C2 per kg of aluminum. When using “green electricity”, the footprint can drop to 4 kg. We call this “low carbon aluminum”.

Then, to be sure that we are on the right track, we try to 'validate' ourselves with external certifications. BREEAM, LEED, Passive House, Cradle-to-Cradle are recognized worldwide and certify our conduct, products, or projects.

At the same time, there is a whole world of issues that, although often overlooked, are crucial when it comes to sustainability. A window that lasts 2x longer, in addition to a good investment is a sustainable option. A window that lacks low maintenance is the same. A window that allows for quick replacement of seals, for example, ensures that thermal, acoustic, and mechanical performances can be maintained throughout their useful life and this also contributes to efficiency and sustainability.

Many pages could be written on this topic…. What is essential to keep in mind is that at Reynaers we offer a wide range of solutions to ensure that whatever the choice is, it is as sustainable as possible.

O'PEOPLE: Since O'LIVING's facades are so rich in windows, was it easy to decide which model was best for the project?

For O'Living, technical solutions were selected that responded to the requirements defined by Architect Miguel Saraiva in terms of comfort, safety, and functionality. Minimalist SlimLine 38 Ferro windows with the 'look & feel' of steel were used. The CW 50 façade systems which, due to their versatility and performance, are a 'best seller' by Reynaers worldwide. CS 77 doors for intensive use, tested for 1,000,000 cycles, to ensure good mechanical performance for many, many years.

O'PEOPLE: Lastly Ricardo, in recent years, Reynares has stood out not only for its products but also for its associated services. Is it a case of saying Together for Better?

Yes, no doubt. Together for Better, more than the signature of the brand is a commitment of the whole team. That's how we want to be in the Civil Construction sector - collaborating with all stakeholders and at all stages of the project - and in this way contributing to the success of all partners, towards the end that we all propose: contributing to the best quality of life in buildings and people.
